It's Social Media Day!
Perfect timing, too, because as you know we just joined Twitter this week. 

To make these logos I placed the actual Facebook and Twitter logos under wax paper. Then, I used a candy squirt bottle to outline them in melted chocolate. Once it set up, I flooded it with candy melts to fill in the letters. I promise that next time I'll try to include pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

To get the Facebook blue just right, I actually covered the logo with a blue Fruit Roll-Up. I probably could have tried to make the chocolate the right color, but I think this worked out just fine.

I realize that this is kind of a repeat from the other day, but it made sense for today's holiday, and honestly I was getting a little tired so I figured I deserved to take a little short cut!

Waffle Iron Day

My kids love a big breakfast.

The first thing on their minds in the mornings is usually either a big plate of waffles or pancakes. So, today should work out well for everyone.

Paul Bunyan Day is a giant of a day!
Paul Bunyan was a gigantic lumberjack of American Folklore. The story goes that he and his blue ox "Babe" travelled around the country performing incredible logging feats. Tales of their adventures grew and have become legendary.

We're celebrating Paul Bunyan Day in a big way by honoring Babe with his very own cake pops!

It's National Log Cabin Day!
What a perfect day to follow The Great American Backyard Campout. It's safe to say that log cabins are mostly a thing of the past, or at least something you're more likely to find at a museum or re-created in a national forest somewhere.

One of our favorite places to go is Mt. Rainier, and one summer we even rented out a log cabin for a night which made for quite the fun evening!

The Great American Backyard Campout is a nationwide event that urges people to put down the iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, big-screen TV, or what-have-you, and get outside to enjoy a little bit of fresh air.

There's nothing better than camping out under the stars on the lawn with loved ones. We try to do it every summer and we didn't even know about this holiday until just now.
So, now we have all the more reason to do it!

We're going against our rule of just one Wild Card Wednesday a month because this was too good to pass up.

Yesterday was the annual "Dick-O-Rama" that my father-in-law hosts with his co-workers & friends. This tradition goes back well over a decade. The story here is that every year my husband's dad gathers a group of people and they tour all of the Dick's Drive-In locations in one evening.

For all of you out-of-towners, Dick's Drive-In is a fast-food restaurant chain in Seattle, WA that offers a simple menu of fast-food staples, and is basically a local institution. They have quite possibly the best hamburgers you will find anywhere, and, yes, we'll put them up against In-N-Out any day!

Joel and I met my husband at the first stop in Lake City for the kick off. We dropped Evan off so that he could join the festivities for the whole trip.

The Dick-O-Rama began in Lake City; then it's on to Holman Road; the next stop is the Queen Anne location, the fourth stop is Capitol Hill, and finally, the trip ends at the original Dick's on 45th in the U-District. The goal is to try a different menu item at each location, and if you've got the stomach for it, to incorporate at least one burger into each of the stops.

It's quite the outing!

So, here's to Dick's, the Dick-O-Rama, and absolutely everything awesome about Dick's that makes them so great!

Tuesday's Tunes... Hootie & the Blowfish

The public has spoken. It was a close battle and Hootie & the Blowfish was the winner in the recent poll question on the blog.

It's a good thing, too, because Hootie & the Blowfish is one of my husband's all-time favorite bands. Their first album, Cracked Rear View, is an absolute classic. We've been listening to a lot of that, as well as all of their other albums lately.

Hootie was actually the first band that I saw live with my husband back when we were dating almost twelve years ago. Oddly enough it was at the Puyallup Fair...who knew we'd end up living in Puyallup with a family one day...

National Ice Cream Soda Day

Instead of the traditional soda water, ice cream and syrup, we've gone with our own cake pop interpretation of the Ice Cream Soda, complete with a cherry on top!

Legend has it that this beverage was a spur-of-the-moment creation from Robert M. Green in Philadelphia, when he needed a new drink to lure customers away from a nearby soda stand. So, here's to you, Mr. Green, as we offer our own little twist on your ingenious creation!

Garfield The Cat Day

Garfield made his very first comic strip appearance on this date in 1978. Created by Jim Davis, Garfield and his whole cast of friends will always be among our family favorites.

I say that we all celebrate with a big plate of lasagna...

and a cake pop of course!

International Sushi Day

I've honestly never had sushi in my life, but my husband loves it and he was my resident expert on this one.

These pops are made from chocolate cake dipped in chocolate candy melts, tinted black. Before I dipped them, I flattened the top and created a brim where I ultimately laid the white Nonpareils to represent the rice. The orange, yellow and green part of the pop are smashed up pieces of Candy Necklace, although you could probably use anything for that, like Runts, Starburst, or even pipe on your own details...

The Candy Necklace just happened to be at the front of my candy closet. Yes, I have a candy closet!

Eat Your Vegetables Day

Well, someone had to eat all of those vegetables and it sure wasn't going to be me!

As the perfect follow up to "Fresh Veggies Day", of course today is "Eat Your Vegetables Day".

Broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and tomatoes just aren't my thing, unless they're in the form of a cake pop. But lucky enough we have small boys in this house that will eat just about anything!

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like vegetables.

I don't really even like many fruits, but we can save that for another day.

I'd be too embarrassed to tell what I ate for brekfast today, but I will tell you that I'll occasionally eat baby carrots if we have ranch to dip them in.

My husband is the one who eats most of the vegetables in the house, and he'll get my kids to eat them too. To be perfectly honest, I had to send him to the store to get some fresh veggies just for this photo shoot. He's big on fresh corn, asparagus, and tomatoes, among others, and loves a good farmers market where ever he can find one.

So, he'll be the first to tell you that today you should celebrate "Fresh Veggies Day" by supporting your local farmers and purchasing their produce whenever you can.

We're thrilled about this month's post because we get to feature a local company that we're really excited about:
C-Dub's BBQ Rub

You know that we love good food on a stick, and at our house we BBQ almost daily. So, when we came across
C-Dub's Piggy Pop, we were blown away!

The pig cake pop is sweet, but before dessert you need the main couse, or in this case the appetizer. This particular pop is a meatball, wrapped in bacon, smoked, and dipped in their famous sauce.
It's fantastic! And together they make quite the pair.

C-Dub's is a fun and quirky BBQ rub and seasoning company, and their seasoning is the missing ingredient to all of your cooking needs!

World Blood Donor Day

This one is near and dear to my heart.
 The blood donation truck used to come by our neighborhood a lot. I am an avid donor and donate every chance I get. Andrew and Evan loved the blood donation truck because it always meant free cookies!

Today, countries worldwide will celebrate World Blood Donor Day with events to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts.

National Kitchen Klutzes Of America Day

Are you the person who spills the milk or knocks the dishes off the counter?
Well, "Karla the Cake Pop" sure is.
She's spilled the milk and dropped a couple eggs on the floor, but it's okay because today is her day!

That's right, spills and breaks don't matter at all today! 
So, just enjoy yourself and if you see someone being klutzy in the kitchen, don't make them feel bad. Accidents happen all the time, and at least we know they're trying!

Sometimes it's just fun and games around here, although some are taking it a little more seriously than others today.

Iced Tea Day

It's believed that iced tea was invented at the 1904 World's Fair. A tea plantation owner planned to give away free samples of his hot tea to fair visitors. But it was so hot that summer in St. Louis, no one was interested. So, he dumped ice into his tea, creating a drink that became a huge hit at the fair. 

I can assure you that these iced tea cake pops will be a huge hit any time of the year. With warmer weather just around the corner, this is the perfect way to beat the summer heat!

Happy Birthday, Donald Duck!

Donald's birthday is recognized as June 9th because it was the date of his debut film, The Wise Little Hen, in 1934.

Even though it's Donald's b-day today, we love all of the classic Disney characters in our house. We took the boys to Disneyland a couple years ago and they've been asking to go back ever since.
Today's cake pop will have to do for now!

World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day is an opportunity to honor the oceans and celebrate all of the wonderful things that they provide.

The official theme for 2011 Ocean Day is "Youth: the Next Wave for Change", which actually makes today quite timely since Andrew is learning all about geography and the four major oceans in the world in school.

Tuesday's Tunes

This will be a new theme that will come about on Tuesdays. Not every Tuesday, but on certain days when I get inspired. We love to have music on in our house, and it's basically a requirement when I am working in the kitchen on cake pops.

Today, and for the past little while, the CD that has been echoing throughout my house is the Counting Crows album August and Everything After. So, today's post is dedicated to the Counting "Crows" and happiness I feel when I listen to them.

I will admit that growth of my musical library was probably stunted in the mid- to late- 90's, so I can't promise any new or cutting edge bands, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Who's ready for a little Christmas in June?!

You might not be ready to think about gingerbread with the holidays so far in the future, but maybe today we should make an exception.

Gingerbread is known for many varieties, from cookies to houses, and today is about bringing awareness to those who have not yet tried a version of it.

So, try something new like a gingerbread cake pop, and then in about six months, make it a holiday tradition!

National Donut Day

These may just look donuts on a stick, but I assure you that these are cake pops dressed up to look like some of our household favorites.

On the weekends, without fail, my son Evan is in my room first thing in the morning begging to go to the "Donut Factory". What he really means is that he wants us to take him to Krispy Kreme. Donuts are Evan's favorite food group, so you can believe that today goes down as his all time favorite day.

National Donut Day was originated by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during WWI. And even though the holiday itself is traditionally recognized on the first Friday of June, many continue the celebration all weekend.

Mmmm...donuts.

On this day, runners everywhere share their passion for one of the best and simplest ways to stay fit. Not that cake pops fit into that lifestyle, but our little cake pop buddy is doing what he can to keep those extra lbs off!
