Flintstones Day

On this date in 1960, an animated, prime-time American television show debuted called
The Flintstones.

The Flintstones quickly became very popular, and went on to become one of the most loved shows of all time.

The original series aired from 1960-1966.
Many cartoons, even today, show obvious influences from this modern Stone Age family.

Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm.
We've got the whole crew!

National Coffee Day

It's National Coffee Day!

I couldn't resist. I had to re-post the pops I did earlier this month for National Coffee Ice Cream Day.

I am definitely not the coffee drinker in my house, so these coffee ice cream pops serve as the perfect middle ground for me. Plus, they work well for today's holiday.
Delicious and tasty!

Also, I have to admit, I'm really excited for tomorrow's post, so this gave me some extra time to get those ready...

National Good Neighbor Day

It's National Good Neighbor Day!

I live in such a big neighborhood that good neighbors often come and go. But I think it's all about how you treat them when there here that really counts.

Whether it's borrowing a few eggs, jump starting a car, or just visiting over a cup of coffee, being good neighbors is an all-important part of being a good person.

Today I'm honoring one of my favorite people that lived in my neighborhood for a few short years when we first moved in. Kiley is such a kind person with a warm heart. She loves to bake and was generous enough to share with me one of the best chocolate chip cookie recipes ever.

So, instead of cake pops today, I've turned that cookie recipe into cookie pops!
Yum!
Sure, I could have re-typed it for you, but aren't some of the best recipes the ones that are well loved?!?!
I think I've only spilled the bottle of vanilla
on this one a few times.

Tuesday's Tunes... The Smashing Pumpkins

It's a Halloween edition of:
Tuesday's Tunes!

In the spirit of the season, today we're featuring
The Smashing Pumpkins.

Another one of my all-time favorite 90's bands!
I was just listening to this one on my iPod last night, thinking that I wished they were still around.
They may have only had a few big hits,
but I remember them fondly...
They tie in well with the seasonal theme, and are super fun Halloween Cake Pops for your next party!

Where were you in '96?

National Pancake Day

It's National Pancake Day!

Instead of honoring today with cake pops, I couldn't think of any better way than to celebrate with pancake art from
Jenni Price Illustration.

If you don't know about her already, Jenni Price takes pancakes to a whole new level with her amazing creations.
In addition, she also loves to paint and specializes in
all things crafty!

As if pancakes weren't already a fun food to eat, her work is out of this world (pun intended)!

How excited would your kids be to wake up to these
Rocketship Pancakes?!?
Pop on over to her blog and check them out!

National Comic Book Day

It's National Comic Book Day!

Who doesn't love a good comic book?
Share, trade, or read one with a friend today.

DC, Marvel, it's all good.
In this house we don't discriminate, because great
comic book characters are timeless!

Today I'm featuring three of our favorites:
Batman, Joker, and Spider-Man.

With great cake pops come great responsibility!

Jim Henson's Birthday

Happy Birthday, Jim Henson!
In honor of the great puppeteer I am showcasing
Sesame Street Cake Pops.

I actually made these at the beginning of the year when I first started making cake pops (so quality isn't the best), but I'm glad to be able to share them with you today.

The amazing Jim Henson gave us some of the most beloved characters of all time, including Kermit the Frog, Ms. Piggy, and the entire Muppet Crew.
He also introduced us to Yoda, movie versions of the Teenage Ninja Turtles, and, of course, all of the
classic Sesame Street characters.

Cookie Monster, Zoe, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch,
Gonzo, Big Bird, Ernie and Bert
The gang's all here!

Mahna Mahna is one of our favorite Jim Henson characters and songs.
I dare you NOT to watch the whole thing :-)

Owl Appreciation

Okay, it's not really Owl Appreciation Day, but I wanted to celebrate something other than today's holiday
(Checkers Day), and do something I'm really excited about.

Recently I ordered this cute owl hat for my son from Odette's Gifts and Photography Props, and it arrived yesterday! Be sure to check out her FB page.
She has the cutest stuff!

I was so excited with how adorable it was that I had to make
these owl cake pops in matching colors!
I'm not sure which Joel enjoys more,
the cake pops or the hat!

Elephant Appreciation Day

It's Elephant Appreciation Day!

Today is your chance to show these big, lovable animals that your truly care. So, start by visiting your local zoo.
They'll be glad you stopped by!

Little kids and big kids are fascinated by these giant creatures. At a zoo, in a circus, or a wildlife special on TV, elephants captivate us by their sheer size.

These elephant cake pops may be diminutive by comparison, but I guarantee they pack a big bite!

Miniature Golf Day

It's Miniature Golf Day!

Always a great place to take a date, hold a birthday party, or just have some good old fashioned family fun.
Hit up your local mini golf course and let the fun begin!

So, grab a friend and go play a round or two,
and if you're looking for dessert afterward,
well, we've got just the thing for you...

I certainly hope these cake pops are up to par!

I am taking submissions through October 10, at which point I will determine the posts for the week.
The Halloween Spook-tacular will begin the week of October 17.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Ye who desires to talk like a pirate, look no further,
for today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Tell all ye mateys to blog like a pirate, tweet like a pirate,
and just let ye true pirate shine through.
Plan t'celebrate by talkin' like a pirate all day long!
Arrr!

Perhaps talking this way will help you get closer to a real pirate so that you might catch one.
Real Pirates - ye be warned.

These pops were inspired from the book
Cake Pops by Bakerella.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

Rice Krispies Treats Day

It's Rice Krispies Treats Day!
They're not exactly Halloween Cake Pops because they're Rice Krispies, but they'll work for today's purposes.

The rules of today are simple:
Make Rice Krispy Treats, Eat Rice Krispy Treats,
Make AND Eat Rice Krispy Treats.

But, if you know me, you know that sometimes
I like to make my own rules!

I mentioned that Halloween was my favorite holiday and more spooky treats were on the way, so here are my Frankenstein Rice Krispy Treat Pops!

Snap! Crackle! Cake Pop!

International Eat an Apple Day

Happy International Eat an Apple Day!

Kick off the unofficial beginning of fall by
enjoying the fruit of the season.

Celebrate all things apple related!
Bake a pie, make a tart, enjoy a crumble, or, of course,
make an apple cake pop!

Better yet, why not take a whole bushel of apples with you to share at work, at school, or with friends?

No matter where you are in the world, take a big bite
of your favorite apple treat!

My favorite is an Apple Crisp.
Today, I made the best recipe from the book
Teens Cook by Megan and Jill Carle.

I couldn't help it, I had to take a picture!

National Stay Away From Seattle Day

Yes, there really is a holiday called
National Stay Away from Seattle Day.

What started as a playful response to too much tourism, too much development, and too many transplants relocating to the area, today's holiday is a real thing celebrated by all Seattleites that want to keep the city the way it's supposed to be.

So, celebrate by visiting the Pike Place Market, riding on the Monorail, ascending up the Space Needle and enjoying your favorite locally grown restaurant,
even if it's just for one day!

As a person that considers herself a born and raised Seattleite, I love today because it makes me think about all the great things to see and places to go
in my beloved city!

Make A Hat Day

It's Make A Hat Day!

I suppose you can make just about any kind of hat that you want today, but instead of the kind that go on your head, we made ours cake pop style!

These Witch's Hat Cake Pops were super fun and quite simple to make. It's never too early to start making Halloween Cake Pops!

First, I molded cake balls into a cone for the top of the hat.

Then, using Oreo's, I separated the cookies from the cream filling to use them for the brims.

I carefully poked a hole in the center of the Oreo with the sharp end of a meat thermometer (or you can use anything sharp in your kitchen).

Next, I placed the cone cake pop on top of the Oreo cookie and stuck the lollipop stick through the hole.

Finally, I painted on a tiny bit of Karo syrup just above the brim and sprinkled on the orange and black nonpareils.

All done in just a few easy steps!

It might be a little early for Halloween, but it is my favorite holiday, so I'll call this a preview of many more spooky treats to come!

National Cream Filled Donut Day

National Cream Filled Donut Day
is a sugary, sweet day!

A slight deviation from regular cake pops, this was my first attempt at making cream filled, donut hole pops!
Donuts are still considered a cake though, right?!?

I found making donuts from scratch is actually quite simple!

This ooey gooey delight will make you want to throw out the diet, forget the calorie counting, and dive right in.
A breakfast favorite in this house, we love these chocolate and vanilla cream filled treats.

I know that once my kids realize that I figured out how to make these, they'll be asking for them for every breakfast.

And once they catch wind about today's holiday, there is no doubt they'll make me take a special trip to the "Donut Factory" (a.k.a. Krispy Kreme) just so they can celebrate!

National Peanut Day

It's National Peanut Day!

Today is all about celebrating the peanut.
Whether it's on a PB&J sandwich, sprinkled on an ice cream sundae, in a peanut butter cookie, or even just enjoying a ballgame with a whole bag of roasted peanuts, they can be so great in so many ways.

Even though these cake pops are pretty straight forward with chopped peanuts sprinkled over chocolate cake, they create the perfect combo of savory and sweet!

We have another reason to be excited today, too, because we're also celebrating the 1st birthday of our "lil peanut"!

National Chocolate Milkshake Day

Happy National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Whether you're talking about the real thing or these chocolate milkshake cake pops, smooth, frothy, rich and sweet are just some of the words that describe today's reason to celebrate.

There are a lot of great places to go for good milkshakes, but for my money Dick's Drive-In has the best in town!

I discovered that the first reference to a milkshake appeared in a British newspaper in 1885, and the original recipe actually called for a shot of whiskey!

These cake pops don't deliver that kind of a kick, but might
give you a sugar rush if you ate several all at once!

9/11 Remembrance

As a cake pop blog we understand our place and typically aim to give you something on the lighter side of life.

However, on days like today, we most certainly recognize the importance of honoring the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. So, as we take a step back and give a moment of pause, we remember all who fought hard
and lost loved ones on that day.
We will never forget.

TV Dinner Day

It's TV Dinner Day!

In 1953, Swanson & Sons introduced a new product called, “TV Dinners,” and changed the prepackaged
meal industry forever.

The modern-day meal can include gourmet recipes as well as organic and vegetarian dishes.

On the other hand, the TV Dinner that I've created for today are entirely
made from large cake pop balls and include various or treats!!!

Inspired by a concept from the book
Hello, Cupcake! by Karen Tack, as you can see,
I tend to skip the "dinner" part and go straight for dessert!

Teddy Bear Day

It's Teddy Bear Day!

Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our most loyal childhood companions.

The origins of the "teddy bear" are closely tied to President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. Specifically, because of a story that he spared a young bear's life while on a bear hunt in November of 1902.

Today, teddy bears are a staple in any young child's life.
Celebrate this American icon and make sure the kids in your life have a huggable teddy bear today...
I know mine always do!
They're absolute favorite store is Build-a-Bear...
Can't you tell!?!

International Literacy Day

Happy International Literacy Day!

Today serves as a reminder about the status of literacy and adult learning globally. There are almost 4 billion literate people in the world, but universal literacy remains
the elusive target.

Today's picture is a bit of a repeat from Book Lover's Day, but I liked these book cake pops, so I'm glad I could find another use for them.

We read with our kids every day and are doing what
we can to spread the word on literacy...
one cake pop at a time!

Wild Card Wednesday - Crock Pot Girls

It's another Wild Card Wednesday!

Now, we're all about the growing cake pop trend, but we can't help but notice the booming crock pot craze. If you're anywhere near a social media site then you've no doubt heard about the Crock Pot Girls.

In less than 4 weeks their Facebook page has exploded to over 1.1 million fans. You can go there for all kinds of crock pot recipes and tips.
We recognize a growing trend when we see it, and this one has taken off like wildfire. If anything, it certainly has revitalized the love for crock pot cookin' in this house!

While they have spawned several wanna-be sites and drawn their detractors, there's only one original Crock Pot Girls!
So, today we honor their fast-tracked success with
Crock Pot and Crock Pot Girls Cake Pops!

Happy Crock Poppin!

National Coffee Ice Cream Day

It's National Coffee Ice Cream Day!

I have to admit that I'm not a big coffee fan.
But in honor of today, I've caffeined-up my ice cream a bit and came up with Coffee Ice Cream Cake Pops!

Even this non-coffee lover has to say these are darn tasty!

But these pops are definitely made to eat right away, otherwise you're left with a melted mess on your hands.
Lucky for me I have a house full of hungry kids!

The process of making these was a little different.
I lined cups of a muffin pan with the cake and then placed the ice cream in each cup to shape it.
After placing the pan in the freezer until they hardened, I removed the pops from the pan, inserted the sticks, and dipped them in chocolate.
Voilรก!
Here is a quick snap shot of some of the steps.

National Cheese Pizza Day

It's National Cheese Pizza Day!

Whether you like thin crust, deep dish, or cake pop style, today's the day to indulge in this All-American classic.

So, go out to your favorite pizza joint or cook up your own pie. Either way, celebrate by enjoying a slice
with family and friends!

The very mention of cheese pizza always
brings a smile to my face.
Especially when I think about poor Kevin McCallister...

National Wildlife Day

It's National Wildlife Day!

Today is the day to bring awareness to the number of endangered animals nationally and globally.
It's also about acknowledging zoos and outstanding animal sanctuaries for all they do to help preserve
and educate about animals.

So, we're doing what we can to help raise awareness and are taking focus on the endangered animal:
The Giant Panda.

Looked upon as the ambassador for all endangered species, the giant panda is a well-recognized symbol of international wildlife conservation.

Sadly, these panda cake pops suffer the same fate as their giant counterparts, for they too are endangered, and will not make it through the end of the day!

First Professional Football Game Anniversary

Today is the anniversary of the very first professional football game ever played!

The origins of pro football can be traced back to this date in 1892, with William "Pudge" Heffelfinger's $500 contract to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

The American Professional Football Association wasn't formed until 1920, which later became the NFL just two years later.

These pops will be the perfect snack to enjoy while we cheer on our favorite teams. Just in time for the first week of football season!

Mary Had a Little Lamb Day

It's Mary Had a Little Lamb Day!

On this date in 1830 this classic nursery rhyme was first published. Authored by Sarah Josepha Hale, it was published as an original poem and inspired by an actual incident. It wasn't put to music until later that century.

These pops were fun to make and were inspired by the
lamb cake pops found in the book Cake Pops by Bakerella -
My Favorite Book!

Mary had a little lamb
Whose fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.
